‘Ending visa lottery is not about racism’: Republican Senator Comments

A prominent republican senator justified suspending the US Diversity Visa Lottery, commenting that it is not about racism but the security of the entire nation. Already, the Trump administration has moved to suspend the entire program after the deadly shooting involving a foreign national perpetrator.
On Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle, Senator Markwayne Mullin defended the decision to suspend the green card lottery system. He seems to be of the opinion that the program should be scrapped completely.
This is indeed an important piece of news, as one of the most important stakeholders of the Trump administration has voiced this opinion. Here is our elaborate take on the news.
What did the senator exactly say?
In the interview with host Laura Ingraham, Mulin responded, saying, “This DEI lottery system for immigration should be ended.” He further added that American citizenship is a privilege and not a right. And we have to vet these individuals properly. This is not about racism. This is about securing the nation and making sure the people inside the United States are secure first and foremost.”
He did not stop there. He went one step further to call the immigration system ‘lunatic’. According to him, the idea of ‘diversification’ is lunacy in itself: “President Trump is right – this should be ended, and ended immediately.”
The interview was hosted right after the Trump administration’s big announcement about the immediate suspension of the Diversity Visa Programme aired. The move was made in the aftermath of the mass shooting at Brown University College, which took the lives of three, including two students and one professor. In the violence, nine others were seriously injured. The suspect was later identified as a Portuguese national: Claudio Neves Valente. He reportedly became a permanent resident of the U.S. through this very program in 2017. His body was later discovered with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The diversity visa program and its future
Previously, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the suspension in a post on X: “At President Trump’s direction, I am immediately directing USCIS to pause the DV1 program to ensure no more Americans are harmed by the disastrous program.”
Historically speaking, the diversity visa program was ushered in under the Immigration Act of 1990. It offers up to 50,000 immigrant visas each year to people from countries with the lowest levels of immigration to the United States. The Trump administration has always been the severest critic of this visa program. Now, the program is not only witnessing suspension, but is also about to face further pushes towards extinction.
