New Update on H-1B $100K Fees Sept 21, 2025

The Trump administration announced on Friday that it would impose a payment of one hundred thousand dollars per year for H-1B worker visas. This announcement has created a chain reaction of responses from the big tech companies, as they advised the visa holders to stay in the U.S. or return asap.
This announcement is very likely to deal a big blow to the technology sector that depends heavily on skilled workers from India and China. This new blow came amidst a series of wide-ranging immigration crackdowns aimed particularly at the H-1B visa. This news is extremely crucial to us, as our EB-1A consultancy directs a significant portion of its efforts towards mentoring many H-1B holders to transition towards EB-1A.
Let’s focus closely on all the consequences of this new revision and what it could mean for all the present and future aspirants.
The bigger motive behind this new announcement
In recent times, H-1B has faced many trials and tribulations. The wide range of immigration crackdown on this category has stemmed from the administration’s desire to reshape the H-1B visa program.
No one, but the distinguished commerce secretary Howard Lutnik, gave words to this aspiration fittingly: “If you are going to train somebody, you are going to train one of the recent graduates from one of the great universities across our land. Train Americans. Stop bringing in people to take our jobs.”
Big tech companies like Microsoft, JPMorgan, or Amazon did not spend any time responding to the announcement by advising the employees under the H-1B scheme to remain in the United States. They have also urged the employees abroad to return to the U.S. asap as the new fee structure is set to take effect soon.
What could be the further consequences of this move?
Many critics are looking at this fee as a disincentive to attract the world’s brightest talents to the U.S.
The same sentiment could be heard in the voice of Deedy Das, a partner at venture capital firm Menlo Ventures, who posted on X: “If the U.S. ceases to attract the best talent, it drastically reduces its ability to innovate and grow the economy.", according to a report by Reuters.
In all likelihood, this move can add millions of dollars in costs for the tech companies. This, in turn, can cause a shockwave of chaos and hardships for the smaller tech firms and start-ups.
Some financial analysts have also suggested that the fee could force companies to move some of their high-value operations overseas. For instance, eMarketer analyst Jeremy Goldman has felt that the U.S. could risk trading its dynamism for short-sighted perfectionism.
The consequences for Indian applicants and aspirants
Statistically, India has been the largest beneficiary of the H-1B scheme. Almost 71% of approved H-1B visa beneficiaries are Indian employees. Many Indian employees’ careers could be in a bottleneck due to the series of crackdowns on the H-1B visa.
