U.S. B1-B2 Visa Interview Wait Times Fall for Indians: Hyderabad Leads With the Shortest Delay

In a welcome development for Indian travelers, the U.S. B1-B2 visa interview wait times have dropped significantly across several consulates, with Hyderabad recording the shortest waiting period among major Indian cities. According to Business Standard, the new data from the U.S. Department of State’s Global Visa Wait Times portal suggests a marked improvement compared to previous years.
The Business Standard report notes that Indian travelers, whether planning business trips, tourism, conferences, or family visits, have often dealt with unpredictable wait times. The recent trend, however, signals a positive shift as U.S. missions streamline operations and increase processing efficiency.
Hyderabad emerges as the fastest-processing consulate
Of all the major U.S. consulates in India, Hyderabad now has the shortest B1-B2 visa interview delay, approximately 4.5 months. This is notably quicker than the timelines reported in other cities:
- New Delhi: around 6.5 months
- Chennai: around 5 months
- Kolkata: approximately 5.5 months
- Mumbai: the longest, at nearly 11 months
These numbers reflect the average time between paying the visa fee and attending the interview, not the appointment calendar’s next available slot. The “next available appointment” date is actually fluid and may change due to cancellations or additional slots opening. The average wait-time metric, however, reveals how long people actually waited.
This distinction is important, especially for first-time travelers or those planning events and meetings on a tight schedule
What’s behind the decrease in wait times?
The shortening of B1-B2 visa wait times can be attributed to multiple operational improvements. India has historically been one of the highest-demand countries for U.S. visitor visas. For much of the past two years, applicants faced delays of more than a year, especially in metro cities. The new data reflects a deliberate push by the U.S. State Department to normalize processing and reduce long-standing queues.
Why this update matters for Indian travelers
For business leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals, even those working with EB-1A consultants or preparing long-term immigration plans, B1-B2 visa timelines often determine whether essential short-term U.S. travel is feasible. Business meetings, conferences, and on-site work assessments can often require fast mobility.
A shorter wait time in cities like Hyderabad, therefore, offers greater flexibility. Tourists and family visitors also benefit, as travel planning becomes less uncertain and more cost-efficient.
The bigger picture for U.S. travel in 2025
India’s B1-B2 visa demand remains high, but the improvement in processing times is a positive sign for 2025. If current trends continue, more Indian cities may experience shorter delays. This will also significantly ease pressure on applicants who previously faced unpredictable interview timelines.
Consulates are expected to keep adjusting capacity and scheduling strategies in the months ahead. Applicants are advised to monitor the official U.S. Global Visa Wait Times portal regularly, as on-ground appointment availability can shift faster than average data metrics indicate.
