Michigan Attorney General Launches Online Portal to Monitor ICE Actions

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has introduced an online portal to make federal immigration enforcement more accountable to the communities it impacts. The tool lets Michigan residents help hold federal agents publicly accountable by tracking and reporting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions across the state. This program enables residents to document federal immigration enforcement through a structured and open platform for submitting concerns and evidence related to ICE and other immigration agencies.
As always, our EB-1A experts have analysed this important update in the light of all the available details.
A new tool for clarity and answerability
On February 4, 2026, AG Dana Nessel announced the Federal Agents Tracker, a digital reporting form that allows residents to submit information about federal immigration enforcement they observe in Michigan. This follows more than 5,000 emails to Nessel’s office expressing concern over ICE activity, which certainly indicated a strong public interest in monitoring these operations.
“What we are seeing from federal immigration agents across the country has been deeply concerning,” AG Nessel said in a statement about the tool’s launch. “In Michigan, we do not, and will not, tolerate harmful, illegal actions against our residents, and I will not hesitate to uphold the law.”
The portal does not replace emergency reporting; residents should still call 911 for imminent dangers. Instead, it provides a centralized system for collecting detailed reports, including video and photo evidence.
How the portal empowers the residents
The online portal furnishes a structured method for residents to report certain details of incidents they observe. Users may include the following descriptions of the incident:
- Number of individuals or agents involved
- Time, date, and precise location of activity
- Agency or unit affiliation, where possible
- Supporting Evidence
- Video, livestream, or photo evidence
The system allows for anonymous reporting, and contact information is kept confidential “to the extent permitted by law.” The Attorney General’s office will monitor submissions daily and may share information with local law enforcement or use it in investigations of alleged misconduct.
The portal was launched during a Detroit roundtable on ICE response. During the meeting, Nessel convened local officials, law enforcement, immigrant rights advocates, and community representatives to discuss concerns about federal immigration actions.
Why does this matter now in the U.S.?
This portal was proposed amid rising tensions and questions about immigration enforcement in the United States. Nationwide, debates have intensified regarding ICE operations and their transparency.
In Michigan, recent legal and civic engagement has increased the urgency around immigration enforcement. Federal detention numbers in Michigan rose to 3,338 people detained through October 2025, nearly triple the number from the same period the previous year. For context, while national ICE detention numbers have also increased during this period, Michigan's rate of growth exceeds the average national rise. The numbers are notably higher than in several neighboring states, including Ohio and Indiana.
Nessel emphasized that her office is not only tracking reports but also preparing to address emerging patterns: “We know that they’re executing immigration missions here in Michigan, and my office is working diligently to prepare in case of a ramp-up, as we’ve seen in other states,” she said at the roundtable.
Communication and civic participation
A core benefit of the portal is its support for direct civic participation. For many residents, especially immigrants and mixed-status families, interactions with federal agencies can be stressful and unclear. The portal provides a legally structured way to report experiences. In turn, the concrete evidence will support investigation rather than rumor or unverified social media posts.
This structured reporting corresponds with broader trends of communities seeking data-driven clarity on government actions. With over 5,000 public inquiries received, the tool may generate one of the most comprehensive crowdsourced datasets in Michigan on federal immigration enforcement.
In place of a conclusion
Michigan’s online portal could work as a practical tool for civic involvement and judicial accountability. In other words, Attorney General Dana Nessel has placed community voices at the center of public safety and civil rights monitoring.
Amid polarized immigration discussions, the portal provides a space for detailed facts and a foundation for evidence-based immigration.
