Late December, the U.S. Embassy in India issued a “Worldwide Alert” for H-1B and H-4 visa applicants. This advisory, shared on social media and official channels, comes amid expanded visa vetting processes and prolonged processing times that are now being experienced globally for these visa categories.
So, what does this notice exactly say? And, what do applicants need to know right away?
As always, our EB-1A green card consultancy has presented a full breakdown of this important piece of news.
What the Alert says: Full advisory text & analysis
“WORLDWIDE ALERT FOR H-1B AND H-4 VISA APPLICANTS
Beginning December 15, the Department of State expanded online presence reviews to ALL H-1B and H-4 applicants as part of standard visa screening. This vetting is being conducted globally for ALL applicants of ALL nationalities for H-1B and H-4 visas. It is an effort to address abuse of the H-1B program while still permitting companies to hire the best of the best temporary foreign workers.
U.S. embassies and consulates continue to accept and process H-1B and H-4 nonimmigrant visa applications. We encourage applicants to apply as early as they can and anticipate additional processing time for these visa classifications.”
This advisory is official and applies globally, i.e., not just to applicants from India. It signals changes in how the U.S. Department of State conducts visa reviews and interviews. It stresses that all H-1B and H-4 applicants should prepare for enhanced scrutiny and longer wait times when seeking visa appointments or renewals.
Why was this alert issued?
The alert stems from a recent expansion of visa screening procedures by the U.S. Department of State, particularly the inclusion of comprehensive online presence and social media reviews. Previously limited to certain cases, these checks are now standard for all H-1B and H-4 applicantsworldwide. The goal, according to the State Department, is to combat misuse of the H-1B program while still allowing U.S. companies to bring in highly skilled talent.
In practical terms, this means consular officers will rigorously review applicants’ social media profilesand other online digital footprints to better assess background, intent, and legitimacy of visa requests. Such vetting aligns with broader national security measures and efforts to close gaps that have previously allowed fraud or misuse of temporary work visas.
What applicants must know in this context
Here’s what this alert means for H-1B and H-4 applicants from India and elsewhere:
Expanded screening is now standard
All applicants will undergo more than routine document checks. Online behavior, public social media posts, and digital histories are now part of the evaluation process. This is not optional or limited to select cases: it is now part of the standard vetting protocol.
Expect longer processing times
The advisory explicitly encourages applicants to apply early and plan for additional processing time. Visa interview appointments, stamping, and renewal timelines may extend by several weeks or even months compared to past norms.
Visa appointments are still being accepted
Despite the expanded checks, the U.S. Embassy and consulates continue to receive and process visa applications normally. There is currently no suspension of services, but timelines have changed.
Real-world impact and concerns
The alert coincides with reports that some H-1B and H-4 interviews previously scheduled in India have been rescheduled for months in 2026, which adds uncertainty for professionals planning travel or relocation.
Further, major companies with large numbers of H-1B and H-4 employees, including Google, Microsoft, and Apple, have reportedly advised workers to avoid non-essential travel outside the U.S. during this period of unpredictable processing.
