Republican Congresswoman Proposes Bill to End H-1B: Everything You Need to Know

Only a few days after Donald Trump’s defense of the H-1B visa Program, Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene put forward a new bill designed to destroy the core of the H-1B program.
In defending her vision of the bill, she commented, “I’ve got a bill that I’m going to be introducing that is a freeze on all immigration. Freeze it until we achieve certain objectives – reforming chain migration, ending H-1B visas, getting birthright citizenship dealt with, and vetting people for their adherence to Sharia law,” as reported by the news agency ANI.
It is redundant to add how such an action could be a severe blow to many Indian professionals’ dreams of securing a life and fortune in the U.S. Moreover, the H-1B is also used as a pathway to U.S. permanent residency through the EB-1A green card route.
So what exactly is stated in the bill? As a responsible EB-1A green card consultancy, we have presented our breakdown and analysis of the bill and what to expect from it.
What is the context of the bill, and what does the bill say?
The underlying intent of the bill could be read in Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Thursday post on X:
"Big Tech, AI giants, hospitals, and industries across the board have abused the H-1B system to cut out our own people. Americans are the most talented people in the world, and I have full faith in the American people. I serve Americans only, and I will ALWAYS put Americans first.”
She asserted, following authentic republican credo, that the bill proposes to end the H-1B programme and prioritise the American workers in sectors such as technology, healthcare, and manufacturing. She also argues that if the next generation of Americans is to live the American dream, the efforts should start from this generation. Here is exactly what she said:
"My bill ELIMINATES the corrupt H-1B program and puts AMERICANS FIRST again in tech, healthcare, engineering, manufacturing, and every industry that keeps this country running!! If we want the next generation to have the American Dream, we must stop replacing them and start investing in them."
Is there any exemption in Greene’s bill?
Actually, Greene’s bill does not intend to destroy and overturn the entire H-1B program; there is one little exemption allowed. The bill includes an exemption for 10,000 visas to be issued per year for healthcare professionals, like doctors and nurses. However, this exemption also comes with its own caveat since the 10,000 per-year cap would be phased out over a decade. The time gap is said to provide time to develop a domestic pipeline of American doctors and physicians.
The bill cuts yet another ground as it is said to take away the pathway to citizenship and force visa holders to return home when the visa expires.
Wrapping up
This bill, if passed or implemented, could erode the entire H-1B program from the ground up. And, it contains all the credos of ‘Make America First’ to the letter.
As a leading EB-1A green card consultancy, we are strongly urging all industry experts to explore EB-1 green card criteria and embrace a merit-based pathway. This is now more important than ever as the grounds under H-1B are unstable.
