Can Trump's Gold & Platinum Cards Replace EB Visa Categories?
.webp)
In September 2025, the U.S. government introduced new visa options under the Gold Card and Platinum Card programmes. This announcement came alongside sweeping changes to the H-1B programme. These gold & platinum “cards” are designed to give wealthy, high-value individuals fast-track routes to U.S. residency (and in some cases citizenship) in exchange for large financial contributions. For those weighing their immigration options, especially skilled professionals, all the talk about these cards could be a little baffling. Here is everything we know, as EB-1 experts, about these cards.
What exactly are these cards?
Gold Card
- Cost: According to sources like NDTV and Forbes, it will cost a US$1 million gift contribution (for individuals).
- Vetting fees: It will also require an additional non-refundable “vetting fee”, often cited at around US$15,000.
- Benefit: If approved, holders receive permanent legal residence (green card status). This essentially replaces some of the existing EB-1 and EB-2 visa categories, which are merit/ability/investment-based.
Platinum Card
- Price: According to several sources, like CBS News, $5 million was suggested as the price of the platinum card.
- Tax benefit: The cardholder will enjoy up to 270 tax-free days per year in the U.S.
- Status: As of now, this card appears to require further legislative/or congressional approval.
Corporate Gold Card
- For companies sponsoring foreign employees: The fee for this card was estimated to be around US$2 million per employee, plus vetting and possibly annual maintenance costs.
- Transferability: The program reportedly allows for the card to be transferred among employees under certain conditions, which is unusual compared to traditional employment-based visas.
Why are these cards making a big splash?
These cards represent a departure from traditional pathways like H-1B, EB-1, EB-2 and EB-5 visas in several ways:
- Fast-track & status guarantee: Once approved, Gold Card holders can become legal permanent residents without having to navigate long waits in the EB categories.
- High cost barrier: These are only for wealthy applicants. The steep monetary requirement places them beyond reach for many, even among high-skill professionals.
- Replacing existing visa streams: The official language suggests these cards may replace or reduce reliance on EB-1 and EB-2 visa programs for exceptional ability/investment/or work-based immigration.
- Tax incentives (especially with the Platinum Card) and other unusual flexibility, etc., make these very attractive to certain global investors.
What is still unclear/potential risks
- Legality & congressional authority: Many law experts say that such sweeping changes (like replacing visa categories, giving tax benefits, etc.) may require congressional legislation; executive order alone might not be good enough to legitimise these cards.
- Operational rollout: Implementation details (how many cards, vetting, timeline) are still being fleshed out. Some programs are in waiting-list status.
- Public & political resistance: There are concerns about fairness, about favoring the extremely wealthy, and about potential inequity vs those who qualify under traditional merit or skills-based immigration.
Who should even consider these over traditional routes?
If you are someone with exceptional ability, strong achievements, or significant financial resources, and you are on the lookout for stability or permanence in the U.S., these cards might look tempting. But for most skilled professionals, there are still credible, proven pathways:
- The EB-1A green card route remains among the best for individuals with extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts, education, business, or athletics.
- EB-1A experts can help you assess whether your credentials, portfolio of achievements, awards, publications, etc., already meet the criteria, or what gaps you need to fill.
To card or not to card?
The Gold & Platinum cards are certainly headline-grabbers. But for many people, they may not be the most practical or risk-free options.
At GCEB1, as leading EB-1A consultants, we guide you through all possible U.S. immigration pathways: whether you are evaluating one of these new "cards" or building a strong EB-1A green card application under the traditional extraordinary ability criteria. The EB-1A route may not require a million-dollar gift, but it does demand clear evidence and expert strategy.
