USCIS Announces New Centralized Vetting Center to ‘Keep America Safe'

In a recent Newsroom update on 5th December, Thursday, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced a centralized establishment to fortify screening, and in their own language, ‘to keep America safe’. This unit reportedly aims to strengthen America’s immigration system's ability to screen out potential threats to the nation's safety and security.

What does the establishment of a new center imply in the immigration landscape?

As already stated, this new center is going to reinforce and fortify vetting measures against all U.S. immigrants. The underlying reason behind it is said to be the potential threats that can endanger the safety and integrity of the nation. Upon being fully operationalized, the USCIS Vetting Center is going to solidify all the ongoing vettings of the aliens. The newsroom update suggests that this centralization will allow the agency to respond with more agility and speed to the threat-strewn landscape.

The newsroom update and the comment suggest that this measure has been implemented in the background of recent surges in violence all over the nation. Recently, we have witnessed Trump’s comment on banning the entire ‘Third World’ Migration. This has taken place in the wake of the death of Sarah Beckstrom, who was shot by an Afghan national, Rahmanullah Lakanwal.

In the current newsroom update, USCIS director Joseph B. Edlow referred to the same context: “USCIS’s role in the nation’s immigration system has never been more critical. In the wake of several recent incidents of violence, including a foreign national attacking National Guard service members on U.S. soil, establishing this vetting center will give us more enhanced capabilities to safeguard national security and ensure public safety.”

Edlow also accused the Biden administration of indiscriminately welcoming immigration without considering the factor of ‘National security and the safety of our communities.’ In line with this argument, Edlow remarked that the Trump administration is adopting many countermeasures to strengthen national security. To put it in his language: “We are building more protective measures that ensure fraud, deception, and threats do not breach the integrity of our immigration system.”

What is the scope of the vetting center?

Once the vetting center is efficiently functioning, it will have access to a full spectrum of classified and non-classified screenings and vetting capabilities. This way, the immigration officer will get to conduct a more thorough and comprehensive review of immigration applications and petitions. The newsroom says: ‘These reviews will leverage state-of-the-art technologies, including artificial intelligence.’

Interestingly, the center will also have access to the Department of Homeland Security’s information and other intelligence community resources, along with law enforcement. It will conduct a review of both pending applications and already-approved applications for aliens. Moreover, the center will operate in accordance with the recently imposed additional security measures aligned with President Trump’s Presidential Proclamation (PP) 10949.
