An alarming news item that surfaced a few days ago has compelled us to address it and write about it. A chilling decision from the highest court

On September 8, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, lifted a lower court's injunction that had barred federal agents from conducting "roving patrol" arrests based on race, language, or location. The original order was a response to raids that appeared to be unlawfully targeting individuals based on their ethnicity. U.S. District Judge Maame E. Frimpong issued a temporary restraining order on July 11, barring immigration raids and stops based solely on race, ethnicity, or language, location, or employment. However, the recent lifting could lead to enforcement operations in Southern California driven by race, ethnicity, or skin colour.

While the majority opinion, penned by Justice Brett Kavanaugh, stated that "apparent ethnicity alone cannot furnish reasonable suspicion," it left a dangerous door open by suggesting ‘ethnicity’ can be a relevant factor among others. Justice Sonia Sotomayor, in a powerful dissent, warned that this decision essentially declares that "all Latinos, U.S. citizens or not, who work low-wage jobs are fair game to be seized at any time".

This legal nuance has a devastating real-world impact. He was surrounded by masked men with guns while waiting for a job, arrested without a warrant or explanation, and detained for three weeks. "That is not justice," he said.
